Introduction to Python and Jython for Java programmers - half day tutorial

2009-03-23 (13.30 - 17.30) Emily Bache, IBS JavaSolutions:

Emily BacheIsn't it about time you tried programming in a dynamic language? Ditch your compiler for half a day and come and have a go at Python. It's quick to develop in, object oriented, and every bit as mature a language as Java is. Python usually comes bundled with unix, and with Jython you can run your python programs wherever there is a JVM. That covers most of the interesting places in the world. Oh alright then. Maybe I should mention that you can run it on .Net too with ironpython. ;-)

This session is a chance for you to experiment and play with a different language idiom, and experience the speed and rhythm of TDD unhampered by a compiler. You'll be guided by a top class programmer with many years of experience using Test Driven Development, Java and python to solve real business problems. The session will include a prepared Kata demonstration, working in pairs to test drive a solution to a similar problem, python style advice, and jython summary.

Target audience:

Programmers who know some Java (or another OO statically typed language) and want to broaden their skills. Those who have never used a dynamically typed language are particularly encouraged to come along, although ruby/groovy/smalltalk etc afficionadoes are very welcome too, especially if you can code the practice Kata more elegantly than I can.
